Andrew Antoniou

A new body of work by Andrew Antoniou is being opened by Scott Howie, Eastern Riverina Arts, at Annabel Wallace Gallery on 22 June 2013.

These works continue to evoke the wonder of theatre, the interrelations of our lives and the force of the imagination, all the while formed and created by a master craftsman. The figures or characters in Antoniou’s work are consumed with their own activity and yet are in close association with all the others, vying for the spotlight. The stage as metaphor for life is central to his work as he sees life “very much in terms of the context of the stage and action being played out”.

The imagination is central to the work and in them we witness the most wonderful fantasies in which we can choose to observe or dive in and imagine ourselves playing along. The works allow the viewer to muse on all the human emotions from all “ends” of the spectrum. They cannot but evoke a response be it whimsical, sad, joyous, seductive, fearful or exuberant to name but a few.

The works are rendered in a variety of mediums that show off Antoniou’s craft in oil, charcoal and etching. The paintings provide colour where the scene requires it and the etchings and drawings show exquisite technical detail.
